A first baby registry can feel like trying to pack for a trip without knowing where you're going. Here's a category-by-category run-through of what's worth listing, ordered by how often you'll actually use it.

Feeding

Bottles in two sizes, a steriliser, breast pump if you're planning to express, a couple of high-chair options for once they're on solids. Skip the bottle warmer — a mug of hot water does the same job.

Sleeping

The cot, a mattress that's rated for newborns, swaddles in multiples (you'll lose them), and a monitor. Black-out curtains pay for themselves in the first week.

Travel gear

A pram that folds easily, a car seat that's newborn-rated, and a carrier for hands-free errands. These are the items most worth pooling on — they're expensive and they last.

Clothing

List sizes through to 12 months. Newborn-only sizes are usually a waste — babies grow fast and most are too small by the third week. Ask for 0-3 month upwards.

What to skip

Wipe warmers, shoe sets for non-walkers, branded baby spa kits. They're lovely on the shelf and forgotten in the drawer.
